Last issue of the year and still expecting comments. Hope to see most of you at the November PSPA conference where editors Courtney Sabo and Brittany Karpinski will cover the unique design details and content focused pages of our magazine... btw, they will also cover all the stuff that just did not work...

This month's issue is highlighted by an amazing double truck cover story about the dual between pitcher and hitter focused on the fastball in both baseball and softball. But that is just the start of our magazine content. Page designs are by Courtney Sabo, who serves as our production editor and our editor in chief. Page content is as always by the R&W staff and editors.
We are looking forward to your comments, sharing of ideas and other musings about our issue or about scholastic journalism in general. Drop us a line... we will get back to you if needed - we love to share ideas.

Just posted our entire December issue with the hope that someone, anyone will take a look and send us some constructive comments. We have received more from NewsPageDesigner than from PSPA members which is quite sad considering. And as always, we are looking to fill the next 16 pages with some good stories so we will take those suggestions too. This issue - focus on homework, dancing, swim team dps coverage, holiday editorial and lots more.

Magazine cover without teaser text... and the sky did not fall. Second issue plans are a big leap from this. We welcome comments - that why we post here. Try to be specific - great to have year-long critiques that will help us improve.

I\'ve suggested that we break some rules with our magazine cover and just include our logo and the month/year date. Do we really need to put all that other stuff there considering our audience and that we have it posted with the publication data later in the issue?

Here\'s some numbers you should have in your Rolodex (or cell phone). Use these resources to cover important issues meaningful to your readership.

I\'ll add more numbers as I think of them. You add some too!

Timothy M. Allwein
Assistant executive director for governmental affairs (aka lobbyist)
Pennsylvania School Boards Association
717-506-2450 ex. 3325
tim.allwein@psba.org
http://www.psba.org
Why you need this number: PSBA is an organization of school board members. You can call Mr. Allwein to find out what his organization thinks about various educational proposals. The organization is active on many issues including Keystone Exams.
What to do NOW: E-mail Mr. Allwein ask to get on his press mailing list

Director of the state Board of Education
717-787-3787
Why you need this number: For accurate information about proposals before the state Board of Education
What to do NOW: Introduce yourself. Tell the director you’re interested in information relating to regulations that affect high schools. Ask him to keep you in the loop on developments and to put you on his press-release recipient list.
Note: Mr. Buckheit is leaving the board soon. A replacement hasn’t yet been named.

The state budget impasse is dragging on. That means school districts aren\'t getting the state share of the operating budgets. Some districts get as little as 13 percent of their operating budgets from the state, but others get as much as 90 percent! Some districts are borrowing money to get by while others are cutting programs. What\'s your district doing? How is the budget impasse affecting students and teachers?

Resources:
Pennsylvania School Funding Campaign, Ron Cowell 717-260-9900
Pennsylvania School Boards Association (Google it to find number)
Your superintendent
Your school district treaurer
House and Senate Education Committee chairmen
For background: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09238/993252-298.stm
Governor\'s office (Yes, you really can call there for a comment!)

If you\'re interested, post a reponse to this message and I will respond with names and phone numbers of state resources. (I\'d do it not but I don\'t have it handy and I don\'t want to spend the time tracking it down unless there\'s interest.)
