Paul Kandell of Palo Alto (Calif.) High School has a vision for high school journalism in a digital world where scholastic journalists adapt and innovate to keep up with and ahead of their professional peers. As the Dow Jones News Fund’s 2009 National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year, he was the 51st person chosen for the honor since 1960.

The Fund wants teachers like Mr. Kandell to apply for the 2010 National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year Awards program. The Teacher of the Year acts as a spokesperson for scholastic journalism. Applicants may be nominated by scholastic media groups, administrators, colleagues, students or may nominate themselves.

The annual program honors the nation’s top journalism teacher, four Distinguished Advisers and several teachers cited as Special Recognition award winners.

Teachers should be advocates of free expression for high school students, emphasize fairness and responsibility, diversity both on the staff and in media content, and be dedicated to the highest standards of journalistic ethics and practice.

The winning teacher will address the fall convention of the Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association. The teacher will attend the annual meeting of the American Society of News Editors and the college-level Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. The Teacher of the Year is also a keynote luncheon speaker for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, a co-sponsor, in New York City each March. Additionally, the winning teacher can attend a professional-level seminar offered at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, St. Petersburg, Fla., and serves as a paid columnist for the Fund’s free quarterly newspaper, Adviser Update. Because of his expertise and advocacy for more tech-savvy presentations and instruction, Mr. Kandell conducted a webinar for the Radio Television Digital News Association on his vision for scholastic media in January, showing the potential for new partnerships and venues for the honored teacher.

The Teacher of the Year and four Distinguished Advisers will receive free subscriptions to The Wall Street Journal Classroom Edition, a co-sponsor, which includes 30 copies of the full-color newspaper for students, a free Teacher Guide, unlimited access to the Classroom Edition Web site and a daily Journal.

The winning teacher will receive a pin and a plaque and the journalism program will get a state-of-the-art laptop computer. The school district will receive a per diem for program-related absences. A senior at the Teacher of the Year’s high school will receive a $1,000 college scholarship to pursue journalism studies. One student at each of the four Distinguished Advisers’ schools will receive $500 college scholarships. Travel and accommodations for the Teacher of the Year will be provided by DJNF and program sponsors.

Nominees must have at least three years of experience teaching high school journalism or advising a newspaper, newsmagazine or news website, have taught or advised during the 2009-2010 academic year and plan to continue teaching and/or advising in 2010-2011.

The one-page application form asks 14 questions and should be accompanied by a résumé, a 35mm color head shot of the teacher, and six sets of two issues of the 2009-2010 school newspaper, newsmagazine or news website. No more than three letters of support may be submitted. The nomination postmark deadline is July 1.

The selection panel for 2010 will include Mr. Kandell along with professional journalists, college educators and representatives of major scholastic journalism groups.

Application forms can be downloaded from the Programs and Forms sections of the Fund’s website at www.newsfund.org.
Conestoga High School's newspaper / web publication, The Spoke, wins Best of Philly award.

Conestoga’s Spoke Newspaper / Web publication earns “Best of Philly” Award

The publishers of Philadelphia Magazine noted the publication’s gutsy approach to journalism, writing, ““Nationally recognized and award-winning, Conestoga’s seasoned journalists learn to tackle serious topics – growing up gay, teen pregnancy, swine flu, illegal gambling – for their published-seven-times-a-year paper and even richer, ever-updating website, Stoganews.com.” No further information about the magazine’s accolades for this top-notch program may be found on the web (yet) – you’ll have to buy a copy of the magazine to get the full scoop.

PSPA congratulates the staff and advisers of The Spoke for a job well-done! Everyone at Conestoga High School can take pride in this exemplary program, the best in Philly and one of the best in Pennsylvania.
