PSPA Announces 2010 Student Journalist of the Year

The Pennsylvania School Press Association is proud to announce the 2010 Student Journalist of the year as

Seth Zweifler of Conestoga High School

The two state runners up include:  Katelyn Frueh  and Emily Weber both from Souderton Area High School

Seth will receive a $500 scholarship and each runner up will receive a $100 scholarship.

Tessa Hochberg from Taylor Allerdice High School received an honorable mention from the judges.

These four student journalists are invited to attend the 2010 PSPA Convention where they will be recognized. 

Congratulations to these 3 journalists and all journalists who took time to put together and submit portfolios.  Encourage this year’s juniors to start looking ahead to next year and begin a portfolio now.

Henry Rome, Pennsylvania School Press Association Student Journalist of the Year

Berwyn, Pa.-Henry Rome, the editor-in-chief of Conestoga High School’s student newspaper The Spoke, was named the National High School Journalist of the Year by the Journalism Education Association at its national convention in Arizona. Rome, who was named the Pennsylvania Student Journalist of the Year in March, received a $5,000 scholarship and has the opportunity to speak at next year’s national convention.

Rome, a senior, has worked on The Spoke for four years. As editor-in-chief, Rome is responsible for all the content in the newspaper, which comes out seven times a year. He is also the News Director for the paper’s news Web site, www.stoganews.com. An investigation he co-wrote last February was named the National News Story of the Year, and his photography has won a variety of awards.

Rome has spent the last two summers reporting for a daily newspaper in Massachusetts, the Cape Cod Times. He also spent a summer interning at an NPR station.

The Spoke was recently named one of the top two student newspapers in the state. The newspaper was awarded the Keystone/All-State award, along with another school, from the Pennsylvania Scholastic Press Association. The Keystone/All-State award is the organization’s highest honor for a student newspaper. The award was announced on March 12.

Stoganews.com, the news Web site for The Spoke, was also recently named among the top four high school newspaper Web sites in the country by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The Gold Crown award is the highest honor given to a newspaper Web site. Stoganews.com provides daily news updates for the Conestoga community, along with photo galleries, videos and sports scores. The award was announced on March 20.
